Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings System
The Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings were developed to assist attorneys and consumers of legal services in evaluating and selecting the appropriate lawyers for their needs. By consulting the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings, you can be confident that you are selecting an attorney with exemplary ethics and the highest level of professional abilities.
Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings are established by lawyers, assuring that the ratings are as accurate and objective as possible. After all, the people most qualified to assess the ethics and abilities of attorneys are others in the profession.
The Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings Process
The Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings are compiled based on confidential assessments offered by lawyers and judges admitted to the Bar in the region where the attorney being evaluated practices. For attorneys that specialize in a particular field of law, information is gathered from other attorneys in the same specialization. Attorneys are asked to evaluate their colleague's professional abilities and ethical standards. Martindale-Hubbell representatives use the following information when formulating their ratings:
- Personal interviews with other members of the Bar
- Secure online surveys
- Paper review sheets
Lawyers are rated periodically throughout their career. In general, an attorney must be practicing law for five years before he can be reviewed by the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings. The organization will then reevaluate a particular attorney's ratings every 5-8 years. If Martindale-Hubbell receives reports questioning an attorney's ethics or abilities, they may choose to reevaluate him earlier.
Disbarment, suspension, or other disciplinary actions taken against an attorney will have his ratings removed from the system.
An Explanation of the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings Scores
As stated earlier, there are two factors that go into the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings: an attorney's ethical standards and his legal abilities. In order for a lawyer's legal abilities to be evaluated, he must first achieve a high general ethical standards rating. This rating is signified by the letter V (Very High).
Once a lawyer has received a high general ethical standards rating, Martindale-Hubbell will evaluate his professional competency in his specialization and region where he practices. The following ratings are given out regarding a lawyer's professional abilities:
- A – Very High to Preeminent
- B – High to Very High
- C – Good to High
The two ratings are combined with the ability rating listed first – for example, AV, BV, or CV.
